A true friend tells people things like that. I have sworn to tell people about boogers, crumbs and nasty stuff on their face. Unzipped zipper are included as well. It is a little embarrassing to have people point out stuff like that. But I'd rather have someone point it out quickly and discretely.

Which reminds me that my mom would always say "It is snowing down South." if a womans slip was showing.

I am glad you are back! I need all the old house support I can get. I always wonder what is going to happen to Durham, up or down. It scared us over to Raleigh (we have no guts, I guess). We have a few renters in the 5 points area as well, the houses being transformed are the 'old lady houses' that sell, no rentals yet. Anyway, I was wondering about your Nigella reference to Haloumi (I have that book)- can you get that at Whole Foods?
Thanks,
Carol
PS: how are your dogs doing?

em

Durham really seems to be on an upswing although it certainly gets a lot of bad press. Lots of new development downtown and in our area as well. Raleigh is awesome, lots better shopping and restaurants for sure!! I work in Durham and we're really into urban renewal so it works for us. As far as the haloumi, I have purchased it at Whole Foods once. I looked again just yesterday and they didn't have it. They do have it at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro. I've also ordered it bulk online but we're out. We're getting desperate, it's totally a staple for us. Check your Whole Foods, they may have it, or if you ask maybe they'll get it. Let me know what you think of it. The dogs are awesome. How is your renovation going, what are you guys working on right now?

Carol

Em: I am like that- the grass is always greener in the place we were looking but rejected when we bought this house. Oakwood, old North Durham... We are a few blocks from Glenwood South which gets better all the time. In fact, everywhere in the Triangle keeps getting better (even Chapel Hill, with its huge population of kid people and their amenities).

As for the house, there is work on the new garage (insulating, making workshop shelves, wiring) which gets classified as 'construction' and the old house (trying out rot-proof basement windows, restoring pine and oak staircase) which is slow, painful restoration. Had some floors done. And yard work, a continuous replacement of biomass.

Looking forward to your contiued stories. If our dog is up to travel, we are going to the quiet place at milepost whatever in October!
Carol

Good Books

  • J. M. Coetzee: Disgrace

    J. M. Coetzee: Disgrace
I guess I'm just a sucker for Booker Prize winners. Here's another one of my Top 5 authors of all times. What a book, emotionally draining, thought provoking, but oh so excellent. Should be required reading for everyone.

  • Ian McEwan: Enduring Love : A Novel

Ian McEwan: Enduring Love : A Novel
Ian McEwan is in the TOP 5 of my favorite authors. He is an excellent writer, and in my opinion this is his best. What a disturbing yet thought provoking book, a subtle morality tale that leaves you breathless. If you haven't read any of his books start with this one, you won't be disappointed.

I have to say, her version of fried chicken is delicious. And the haloumi bake (if you can track down the haloumi cheese) has become one of our weekly favorites, YUM!

  • Augusten Burroughs: Running with Scissors

    Augusten Burroughs: Running with Scissors
I read this book on my honeymoon, a nice 10 day long sojourn on a deserted Caribbean island with no electricity. A great opportunity to read and I finished this book on the first day. It ruined me for anything else, I loved it so much anything else I tried to read was a let down. This is a very special book, disturbing, but special. Augusten Burroughs is an amazing man, his second autobiographical book "Dry" is excellent well. A real unvarnished journey into the life of an alchoholic.

  • Huston Curtiss: Sins of the Seventh Sister : A Novel Based on a True Story of the Gothic South

Huston Curtiss: Sins of the Seventh Sister : A Novel Based on a True Story of the Gothic South
I read this book in a day and a half, I couldn't put it down. If you're a fan of twisted southern fiction with strong female characters, then you'll love it.

  • jim harrison: True North

    jim harrison: True North
I loved this book. I'll admit that I'm a little partial because he's from Northern Michigan and lots of his books are set there, but I mean it when I say this is a very special book. Jim Harrison speaks to me on so many different levels, I can hear his voice coming out through the pages so clearly. And I love the way he portrays women in his books, he is very thoughtful, sometimes sexist, but most of the time dead on. His books always have great sex scenes, never cheesey, always totally real. If you've never read one of his books start here and work backwards, or pick up Legends of the Fall, one of his best.
